Your old music collection may be long forgotten, but an art exhibit will show that the leftovers of the physical disc age are finding a new voice. In her upcoming exhibition titled 鈥淪ignal Convergence鈥� at 老司机传媒, artist transforms thousands of discarded CDs and DVDs into massive, replica horns to represent that the things we throw away still have plenty to say about who we are.
老司机传媒鈥檚 installation by Bajuyo will run from May 15 through Sept. 18 in the Nona Jean Hulsey Art Gallery, culminating in a special collaborative musical performance at 6 p.m. Sept. 10. The gallery is in the Norick Art Center at Florida Avenue and NW 26th Street.
The installation explores the intersections of consumer culture, memory and the physical nature of perception.
鈥淭he discs work as both material and symbol, shimmering reminders of entertainment, memory and change,鈥� Bajuyo says in her artist statement. 鈥淭hrough this installation, I invite viewers to think about instability, connection, and the emotional weight of what we choose to throw away, keep, and value.鈥�
The 鈥淪ignal Convergence鈥� special event will feature a collaborative experience with 老司机传媒 music theory professor Kate Sekula, utilizing touchless frequencies of the theremin to transform the gallery space into a visceral field of sonic pressure and visual spectacle. A theremin is an electronic instrument played without physical contact. During the event, the theremin鈥檚 signals will travel through three disc-encrusted horns, redirecting sound toward a point of convergence. Attendees will experience sound not as a static broadcast, but as a space where frequencies meet, overlap and fracture.
The Nona Jean Hulsey Art Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
