Instrumental Music Education

The purpose of the Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Education is to prepare the student for a professional career in teaching instrumental music in a group setting. Students are trained to teach individual instruments, as well as instrumental ensembles, which results in public school certification at the K-12 levels. ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½'s Music Education students gain practical teaching experience in the field as early as the first year. Many students also work as private lesson teachers, marching band techs, or otherwise volunteer in classrooms during their studies.

ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½'s music education program produces highly desired and competitive graduates, with a 100% placement rate. Our Instrumental Music Education alumni have found success in teaching positions and professorships around the globe. ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ alumni have been celebrated as district, state, and OKMEA teachers of the year and attained distinction for pedagogical excellence.

  • 2006 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year: Robyn Hilger
  • 2014 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year: Peter Markes
  • 2018 OKMEA Hall of Fame Award: Anne B. Guevara
  • 2026 OKMEA Hall of Fame Award: Susan Clothier
  • 2026 Kansas Teacher of the Year: Rachel Marlow

Music education studies are boosted by ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½'s Collegiate National Association for Music Education (CNAfME) chapter. Through CNAfME, ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ Music Education students are able to network with working professionals, meet special guest speakers, and receive annual assistance to attend Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OKMEA) and Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) conferences. Graduates of the program have 100% pass rate on the Oklahoma Teacher Certification Exams and 100% placement rate for those who were actively seeking teaching positions. Those not seeking positions have been accepted into graduate programs. Students have accepted positions throughout the U.S., Europe, and South Korea.
