First-Generation Student Profesional (StuPro) Information

First-Generation StuPro Mentees

First-Generation StuPro Mentees are participants in ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½'s StuPro Program who identify as first-generation college students. These positions provide meaningful on-campus employment ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ opportunities while fostering professional, personal, and leadership development through intentional mentorship.

As members of the broader StuPro community, First-Generation StuPro Mentees engage in the same program requirements, learning outcomes, and developmental experiences as all StuPro participants. In addition, these positions are specifically designed to support the success, persistence, and professional development of first-generation college students by providing enhanced access to mentorship, professional experience, and campus engagement opportunities.

Funding for First-Generation StuPro Mentee positions is generously provided through the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages First-Generation Scholarship. This investment creates meaningful opportunities for first-generation students to gain professional experience while contributing to departments and initiatives across campus. While First-Generation StuPro Mentees participate in the same core program requirements, learning outcomes, and developmental experiences as all StuPro participants, these positions are specifically reserved for first-generation college students and are compensated at a rate of $15.00 per hour, compared to the standard StuPro rate of $12.00 per hour. First-Generation StuPro Mentees typically work approximately 10 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.

First-Generation StuPro Mentees serve in paid, paraprofessional positions within university departments under the guidance of a faculty or staff mentor. Through these experiences, students gain practical workplace experience while developing transferable skills that support their academic, personal, and professional success.

First-Generation StuPro Mentees are encouraged to:

  • Develop professional communication and workplace skills
  • Explore career interests and pathways
  • Build meaningful relationships with faculty and staff mentors
  • Strengthen leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities
  • Connect classroom learning with real-world experiences
  • Contribute to the mission and work of the university

A defining feature of the StuPro Program is the intentional mentoring relationship between each student and their assigned mentor. Mentors provide guidance, feedback, support, and opportunities for reflection throughout the academic year.

Together, mentors and mentees establish learning goals, discuss professional development, and identify opportunities for growth both within and beyond the workplace. Through regular mentorship, students gain confidence, develop professional competencies, and strengthen their ability to navigate both the university environment and future career opportunities.

First-Generation StuPro Mentee positions are available to students who identify as first-generation college students. Participants are employed through university departments and are compensated through funding provided by the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages First-Generation Scholarship.

Students participate in program orientation, complete required learning and assessment activities, and engage in ongoing professional development as members of the broader StuPro community.

First-Generation StuPro Mentee positions are posted through Handshake and filled through ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½'s student employment ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ process. Students who identify as first-generation college students are encouraged to regularly review available opportunities and apply for positions that align with their interests, skills, and career goals.

Successful applicants are hired through Student Employment and participate in StuPro orientation, mentorship activities, and professional development experiences throughout the academic year.
