Supporting First-Generation Students
At ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½, we recognize that being the first in your family to attend college is an accomplishment worth celebrating. First-generation students bring unique strengths, perspectives, and resilience to our campus community, and we are committed to ensuring they have the support, resources, and connections needed to thrive from orientation through graduation.
Through the Office of Student Engagement and campus partnerships, we offer intentional programming, mentorship, recognition, and professional development opportunities designed to foster belonging, celebrate achievement, and empower first-generation students throughout their collegiate experience.
The First-Generation Student Professionals (StuPros) program provides paid professional experiences for first-generation students while connecting them with faculty and staff mentors who support their academic, personal, and professional growth. Through meaningful campus employment ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½, mentorship, and career development, students build transferable skills while developing confidence as leaders both on campus and beyond.
Each November, ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ celebrates National First-Generation College Celebration Day by recognizing the accomplishments of our first-generation students, faculty, and staff. The celebration includes a campus reception hosted in partnership with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, creating opportunities for students to connect with faculty, staff, and fellow first-generation classmates while celebrating the impact of our first-generation community.
Building meaningful relationships is an important part of the college experience. Faculty and staff members who were also first-generation college students proudly display First-Generation placards outside their offices, helping students easily identify mentors and advocates who understand the first-generation journey. This growing network provides visible points of connection and encouragement across campus.
From the moment students arrive on campus, we intentionally recognize and celebrate our first-generation community. During Stars Week, Stars 101, and Preview events, incoming students are invited to self-identify as first-generation students and are introduced to available resources, support services, and opportunities, including the First-Generation Student Professionals (StuPro) program. Students also receive First-Generation stickers to celebrate their identity and foster connections with their peers.
Graduation is a milestone worth celebrating. Each spring, ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ honors graduating first-generation students by providing commemorative First-Generation graduation medallions to wear during Commencement. Hundreds of graduates have proudly worn these medallions as they crossed the stage, recognizing not only their personal achievement but also the lasting impact they will have on their families and future generations.
Whether you are beginning your first semester or preparing to graduate, ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ is committed to supporting, celebrating, and investing in the success of our first-generation students every step of the way.
