The Student Professional Experience Program (StuPro) is ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½'s signature student employment ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ and mentorship initiative. Through paid, paraprofessional positions across campus, students gain meaningful professional experience while developing leadership skills, workplace competencies, and mentoring relationships with faculty and staff.
More than a student job, the StuPro Program is an intentional learning experience that helps students build professional competencies, explore career interests, and develop relationships with university professionals who are invested in their success.
The StuPro Program seeks to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice by providing students with opportunities to:
- Develop professional and workplace skills
- Explore career interests and pathways
- Strengthen leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities
- Build meaningful mentoring relationships with faculty and staff
- Gain hands-on experience in a professional environment
- Contribute to the mission and work of ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½
- Increase engagement, belonging, and connection to the campus community
StuPro positions are funded for the academic year and provide students with paid, paraprofessional employment ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ experiences across campus. Most StuPro Mentees are compensated at a rate of $12.00 per hour and work approximately five to ten hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, depending on their position and funding allocation.
StuPro Mentees serve in paid, paraprofessional positions across the university under the guidance of dedicated faculty and staff mentors. Funded for the academic year, these employment ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ experiences provide students with opportunities to contribute meaningfully to campus operations while developing professional competencies, leadership skills, and practical workplace experience. Most StuPro Mentees are compensated at a rate of $12.00 per hour and work approximately five to ten hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, depending on their position and funding allocation.
Each StuPro position is intentionally designed to include both workplace responsibilities and developmental learning opportunities. Students are encouraged to reflect on their experiences, establish professional goals, and connect their work to broader career aspirations.
At the heart of the StuPro Program is the mentoring relationship between students and university professionals.
StuPro Mentors provide guidance, coaching, feedback, and support throughout the academic year. Together, mentors and mentees establish learning goals, discuss professional growth, and identify opportunities for continued development.
In addition to their employment ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ responsibilities, StuPro Mentees participate in program orientations, assessment activities, and professional development opportunities designed to enhance their overall experience.
By the end of the StuPro experience, StuPro Mentees will be able to:
- Apply Knowledge & Skills
Apply knowledge and abilities to professional-level assignments, producing measurable outcomes that demonstrate achievement of individualized learning goals. - Demonstrate Creative Problem Solving
Analyze challenges encountered in the workplace and implement innovative strategies to address them, reflecting on lessons learned and their influence on leadership and professional growth. - Exhibit Professionalism & Career Readiness
Demonstrate professional competencies that prepare them for success in post-graduation employment ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ and career pathways.
As part of the broader StuPro Program, ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ offers First-Generation StuPro Mentee positions for students who identify as first-generation college students.
Funded through the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages First-Generation Scholarship, First-Generation StuPro Mentee positions provide first-generation students with meaningful employment ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½, mentorship, and professional development opportunities through the broader StuPro Program. Participants are compensated at a rate of $15.00 per hour while gaining valuable workplace experience and professional skills, reflecting ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½'s ongoing commitment to supporting the success of first-generation college students.
First-Generation StuPro Mentees participate in all core StuPro requirements, learning outcomes, and developmental experiences while serving in paid positions across campus.
Each spring semester, faculty and staff members may apply to host a StuPro Mentee for the upcoming academic year through the StuPro Position Request Application process.
StuPro positions are intended to be paraprofessional, developmental roles that provide students with meaningful work experiences, mentorship, and opportunities to develop professional competencies. Applications are reviewed based on the educational value of the position, the mentoring opportunities available to students, the anticipated impact on departmental operations, and the supervisor's commitment to student development.
Because funding is limited, all positions must be requested annually, including positions approved in previous years.
Once StuPro positions have been approved, departments recruit and hire StuPro Mentees through ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½'s student employment ÀÏ˾»ú´«Ã½ process. Approved positions are typically posted through Handshake, allowing students to explore opportunities, submit application materials, and participate in departmental selection processes.
Students are encouraged to regularly review Handshake for available StuPro opportunities and apply for positions that align with their interests, skills, and career goals.
Successful applicants are hired through Student Employment and participate in StuPro orientation, mentorship activities, and professional development experiences throughout the academic year. Most StuPro Mentees are compensated at a rate of $12.00 per hour. First-Generation StuPro Mentees, whose positions are funded through the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages First-Generation Scholarship, are compensated at a rate of $15.00 per hour.
